We first saw this at Auto Expo 2012 as a concept is very well going into production and would be launched in February 2015. The 140 kg hybrid scooter is going to be manufactured in the Hero MotoCorp’s Gurgaon plant. Only 6000 units per annum would be produced to start with and as per the demand the production would be scaled.
The company might be looking more towards global market than India as at the price close to Rs. 1,00,000, there might not be much buyers. The high price could be attributed to the steel frame, 8KW motor, 124cc engine, lithium-ion battery. Leap might be first launched in Africa and Latin America where the company is exporting its bikes now. Hero might be looking at USA and European markets too for its hybrid machine.
It is going to be first hybrid scooter produced in India with weight of 140kg, fuel injection, lithium-ion battery, 124cc engine, 3.0 litre fuel tank. The top speed for this would be close to 100Km/h. Leap is going to have a range of 340km which seems to high and would be interesting to see if it holds true even on Indian roads.
The 240 mm front disc brake could slow Leap smoothly on braking. City maneuvering might not be an issue due to the intelligent placement of battery and motor which gives the vehicle low centre of gravity.
The PMAC traction motor is supposed to give 60NM of torque which seems impressive. If the recharge is not available than there is always a 3 litre fuel tank which could take it to location where plugging outlet is available.
Hero recently set up a manufacturing plant in Villa Rice, Colombia which is going to be operational by 2015 and is expected to produce 78,000 units in the first year.
