In April 2012, Italian auto giant Piaggio made it in headlines by launching Vespa LX125. During the launch, company’s executives made it clear that Vespa is a premium scooter brand and does not wish to be a part of price war to win the Indian scooter market. March 2014 saw the launch of Vespa S, and the orange colored scooter has managed to attract hundreds of metro sexual buyers since then.
Style is important than numbers
The vehicle offers perfect combination of contemporary features and retro looks like most of the Vespa scooters. Its three spoke black alloy wheels, chrome facia, and orange color can easily attract a lot of people while on the road. Scooter’s tail lamp, rear view mirrors, and instrument cluster perfectly match the overall theme. If you find this baby in parking, you may wish to sit on it, and ask your friend to click few snaps so that you can upload them on Instagram.
Scooter’s chrome finishing, sober design, top notches switches, and rectangle headlamp can easily manage to give you that 1970s feel. People born during 1960s would definitely smile and stare at this orange beauty.
Its seats are stylish, but pillion rider might not feel comfortable due to absence of rear grab. Scooter offers under seat storage space that is good enough to keep small helmet.
Engine
Vespa S is equipped with 125 cc four-stroke engine that is designed to offer low fuel consumption. Most of the user reviews suggest that the scooter may offer overall mileage between 55 to 62 KMPL. This motor manages to show sufficient power at all speeds and that too, without any vibrations. Vespa S is fitted with 8.3 liters fuel tank. It can reach speed of around 85 KMPH in 11 seconds.
Vehicle’s overall weight is 114 kgs. So, you can easily manage to handle this scooter while in heavy traffic.
The scooter can be perfectly controlled with its disk brake in the front and drum brake in the rear. Single side shock absorber in the front and hydraulic shock absorber in the rear can easily manage to absorb those potholes and bumps while travelling on poor roads. Not just user reviews, but even car and bike experts have appreciated the performance of this scooter’s braking system and suspension system
Comparison with Activa
Vespa S is often compared with Honda’s Activa. Both scooters offer almost the same mileage. Activa’s seat height is 765mm, which is lesser than Vespa’s 785 mm. So, Honda’s scooter can prove to be better option for individuals with short height. Vespa S weighs 5 kgs lesser than Activa. Honda’s fuel tank’s capacity is 6 liters, so, it is lesser than Vespa’s 8.5 liters. The orange beauty is priced around Rs 20,000 more than Activa, but this seems small amount compared to vehicle’s design. Last, but not the least, style wise, Vespa S wins the race.
The orange beauty is perfect for people who wish to travel in style. The scooter is available with popular color options like orange, monte bianco (white), rosso dragon (red), and nero matt (black). Scooter’s S variant comes with price tag of around Rs 75,000 and Rs 77,000. Price may vary depending on taxes.
You can also opt for Vespa’s limited edition Elegante variant, LX 125, or VX variant.
Piaggio’s entry in premium scooter segment
Reports suggest that Vespa is also planning to launch its GTS Super 300 scooter in the Indian market soon. Plus, scooter lovers are also waiting for the launch of Vespa 946 that is expected to come with price tag of Rs 7 to 8 lakhs.
According to Piaggio’s MD and chairman Ravi Chopra (tip-he has nothing to do with Bollywood’s director, late Ravi Chopra), Vespa 946 is hand crafted with the best technology. News reports also suggest that the scooter will be manufactured in Europe, and Piaggio will bring limited number of completely built units to sell in India. Ravi interacted with journalists in March this year and indicated that his company plans to launch 946 by June 2015.
