2023 Yamaha YZF R7 Review
First appeared in 1999, the 2023 Yamaha YZF R7 is a breath of fresh air! Although special, it may not be impeccable. But surely, this lightweight sport motorbike is convenient and lively as hell. It is inspiring enough to become your first motorbike experience if you ever dreamt of riding a sport bike on a racetrack. The YZF R7 is a champ! So get going, and ride the R7 as it was designed to be ridden!
Born To Be Wild
Yamaha made vital changes to the MT-07 platform while creating the YZF R7. These include revamped bodywork and revisions to the existing chassis. Yamaha also fitted an assist-and-slipper clutch for the YZF R7 and an optional quick shifter. Additionally, a gearing change adds more acceleration and thrill to the whole lot.
The new YZF R7 features a steeper 23.7 degrees vs. 24.8 rake. It has a slightly less trail and a shorter wheelbase than the MT-07. It accommodates a new fully adjustable 41mm inverted KYB fork with spring rates alongside a revised radiator that improves cooling.
The Need For Speed
The YZF R7 also uses a smaller, lighter battery and wider triple clamps to accommodate four-piston brake calipers. And the offset now is 37mm. In addition, the revised shock linkage at the rear raises back rider height.
The new KYB shock in the 2023 R7 offers adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. In addition, an uncompromising mount aluminum center brace is bolted to the steel frame at the swingarm pivot. Effectively, this increases torsional rigidity.
The seat height of R7 compared to the MT-07 is higher. This is because the predecessors inspire the clip-on handlebars and a rider triangle. But the riding position is aggressive without being extreme. Furthermore, the changes to the chassis and ergonomics enhance the handling capabilities. And overall, the 2023 YZF R7 is an elegant and comfortable motorcycle.
Get Past Everybody
The fresh bodywork is wrapped around a compact engine. And the chassis even makes the bike very narrow and aerodynamic simultaneously. So the new R7 is like a cross-bred between the R1 and R6.
However, the YZF R7 race bike is accessible to all levels of riders. The new Brembo radial front master cylinder combines with Advics radial-mount 4-piston calipers and 298mm rotors. This amounts to some severe braking force.
The Brembo master cylinder controls a Nissin caliper and a 245mm rotor. Even though ABS interference is minimal under extreme braking, the sad part is it cannot be turned off. As a result, you are most likely to encounter more of a freewheeling sensation. Nevertheless, the user-friendly nature of the YZF R7 allows you to reel it back.
Steering the YZF R7 is effortless while maneuvering in the slow and fast sections of the track. It reacts like a decent sports bike. Moreover, transitioning back and forth at speed is relatively simple. The narrow chassis responds exceptionally well to input with minimal force.
Navigating Serpentine Racetracks
The R7 is consistently predictable. The 689cc CP2 twin is a blast on the racetrack. You will never feel worn out as the throttle response is smooth and efficient. You will never have to worry about upsetting the chassis.
With some usable torque, the initial hit is slow. But it flattens out at the upper end of the rev range. So then, you only need to grab a gear via the quick-shifter. And lo, you will have a lot more to play with.
Understanding The Physics Of Your Motorbike
The instrument panel provides all the pertinent info. The bar-graph tachometer and gear indicator are simple to follow. And the lack of details on the dash and switchgear for electronic riding aids feels comforting. You don’t have to worry about which button does what while riding.
You would love to mount the R7 and move to the racetrack or on that big straightaway that passes through the finish line. However, the aggressive posture of the bike is surprisingly forgiving.
